JNU Students Complete 36-Day Advanced Research Training on Ashwagandha and Shankhapushpi at KSAS, Lucknow

The Kuruom School of Advanced Sciences (KSAS), Lucknow, has successfully concluded a 36-day intensive research training programme for students from the Centre for Ayurveda Biology, School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies (SSIS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Held from June 1 to July 6, 2026, the programme trained 13 students — 12 from JNU and one from the University of Delhi — in advanced laboratory techniques, while demonstrating how traditional Ayurvedic knowledge can be scientifically validated through modern biological research.
The training centred on a research project investigating the neuroprotective and immunomodulatory mechanisms of two well-known Ayurvedic neuroadaptogens, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), and their role in maintaining physiological homeostasis. Participants combined theoretical instruction with hands-on training in phytochemical extraction, mammalian cell culture, MTT cytotoxicity assays, acetylcholinesterase assays, UV-Visible spectroscopy, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and quantitative data analysis, gaining practical exposure to the complete workflow of evidence-based herbal drug validation.
FACULTY PERSPECTIVES
Dr. Pooja Agarwal, Scientist at KSAS, said the training was designed to provide participants with practical laboratory experience while helping them understand how traditional Ayurvedic concepts can be explored through rigorous scientific methods. She added that the programme has equipped students to contribute to research and development, phytopharmaceutical innovation, quality assurance, and the evidence-based validation of herbal medicines.
Dr. Manish Kumar noted that JNU's interdisciplinary academic culture significantly enriched the programme, with students bringing a strong research-oriented mindset that encouraged meaningful scientific discussions and facilitated the integration of modern scientific approaches with traditional Ayurvedic knowledge.
STUDENT REFLECTIONS
Aditi Birkhani, a first-year undergraduate student, said the internship made advanced scientific methodologies accessible early in her academic journey. She added that working alongside experienced scientists strengthened her analytical confidence and inspired her to pursue translational research in Ayurveda Biology.
Ansh Srivastava said the programme helped him understand the neuroprotective mechanisms of Shankhapushpi through cell culture, spectroscopy, and biochemical assays. He credited the supportive mentoring environment with significantly enhancing his research capabilities.
Shreshtha Srivastava described the internship as a defining milestone that bridged ancient Indian knowledge with contemporary translational science. She said that mastering modern experimental techniques has equipped her with the scientific skills and confidence needed to contribute to future innovations in natural drug discovery.
Another participating student Vishal Kumar, felt that the programme offered a rare opportunity to apply classroom learning to a live research setting. He/she added that the structured mentorship and access to advanced laboratory infrastructure gave him/her a clearer sense of direction for pursuing a research career in Ayurveda Biology, and that the experience has strengthened his/her resolve to continue working at the intersection of traditional knowledge systems and modern scientific validation.
PROGRAMME OUTLOOK
The training programme is part of a broader effort by KSAS to build structured pathways between academic institutions and advanced research infrastructure, enabling students to move beyond theoretical coursework into hands-on, project-based scientific practice. By anchoring the curriculum in real research questions rather than simulated exercises, the programme seeks to prepare a new cohort of researchers equipped to contribute meaningfully to India's growing evidence-based Ayurveda and life sciences ecosystem, while reinforcing collaborative ties between KSAS and leading academic institutions such as JNU.
The successful completion of the programme reflects KSAS's commitment to nurturing a new generation of researchers capable of integrating India's traditional knowledge systems with globally recognised scientific methodologies. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based research, KSAS continues to contribute to the advancement of Ayurveda Biology and translational biomedical science.
